China SCADC Subject Categories

The China Subject Categories by State Council of China schema is based on the degree-granting and academic training directory as announced and published by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.
The China Subject Categories (CSC) classification has two levels of category hierarchy: one higher level and one more granular detailed There are thirteen (13) broad level categories represented by two-digit codes and one hundred and ten (110) more granular categories, which are numbered according to the broader CSC category in which they fall, for example, Biology (CSC – 0710) will roll up into Natural Science (CSC--07).
There were a number of categories which defied satisfactory bibliographic definition. For reasons of under-representation in publication history or Web of Science (Web of Science) subject area overlap, there are thirty-three (33) subordinate CSC categories not included in the mapping; and one of the thirteen superordinate categories is intentionally omitted: 11 – Military Science.
All Web of Science subject areas are represented in the mapping except BQ – HUMANITIES, MULTIDISCIPLINARY. Web of Science categories can be mapped to more than one CSC value.

Category-to-category mapping where CSC classifications are mapped to current Web of Science subject areas (Web of Science subject areas current as of 31 December 2012).

In 2011, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China revised its national degree conference directory. The catalog, published in Chinese, is hierarchical with thirteen (13) broad-level, superordinate classifications and one hundred and ten (110) more granular, subordinate classifications.
The schema was translated into English by Chinese-language experts and by reviewing and comparing the official English translation of an earlier version of the CSC schema published by the Higher Education Press in a 1997 document. Using published Chinese resources and combining and comparing those resources to scope notes for Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E), Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI), each Web of Science subject area was assigned to either a subordinate/superordinate CSC or a superordinate-only value by manual input.
The mapping of Web of Science subject area to CSC category must be reviewed periodically because Web of Science subject areas may change from one year to the next. The Web of Science subject areas LOGIC and AUDIOLOGY & SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY are new to Web of Science for 2012. The Web of Science subject area Green & Sustainable Science & Technology is new to Web of Science for 2016. These have been mapped as follows:
Web of Science Subject Area | CSC Classification |
---|---|
Logic | 0701 Mathematics |
Logic | 0812 Computer Science and Technology |
Audiology & Speech Language Pathology | 1002 Clinical Medicine |
Green & Sustainable Science & Technology | 08 Engineering |
